Frozen Custard Vs. Ice Cream – See Why Frozen Custard is Superior to Ice Cream!

When you’re craving a nice, cold, tasty treat on a hot summer day, in the dead of winter, or anywhere in between, what dessert automatically pops in your head? Many people suddenly think of ice cream when they want a cold and creamy dessert.

Sadly, there is some confusion out there when it comes to the frozen desserts world. Many people feel there is little to no difference amongst all the different desserts. In fact, several people will easily call frozen custard, frozen yogurt, or gelato “ice cream,” as if ice cream is a giant umbrella that encompasses all these frozen desserts.

Well, we are here to tell you that ice cream and frozen custard (and all those other frozen treats) are NOT the same! Their contents are different, and even the way they’re made differs as well.

In fact, we think that by the end of this blog, you’ll never want to eat ice cream ever again!

“So what makes ice cream so different from frozen custard?” you ask. “Aren’t they just the same thing?!”

In short, no, they’re not.

Ice cream contains at least 10% milk fat and is generally made from milk or cream and sugar. Frozen custard, on the other hand, is a much richer, more delicious treat compared to ice cream. It is also made with milk and sugar, but it is made with quality cream and eggs, which really kick frozen custard up a notch over ice cream. Custard is softer and creamier, and it has a fresh taste that you won’t find in ice cream.

The way ice cream is made is quite different when compared to frozen custard, especially when it comes to soft serve ice cream. Soft serve ice cream either arrives at stores in a powdered mix that is reconstituted with tap water or in a pre-mixed liquid form that comes in pouches. The powder form requires the store to add packets of flavoring powders or liquid flavorings to create different flavors while the liquid form tends to include actual chunks of fruit, candy, or chocolate.

The liquid mix is poured into a “holding’ compartment of the soft serve freezer, and a portion of the liquid flows into a freezing cylinder inside. Inside the machine, there is a beater, which has a scraper blade. As the soft serve is being frozen, air is beaten into it, making it a more aerated dessert. Whenever you order a cone of soft serve ice cream, the operator will lift the handle on the door that covers up the freezing cylinder, and your aerated dessert is dispensed right in front of you.

If that doesn’t sound appetizing, consider frozen custard! Our custard is made fresh – every hour ON the hour! We implement our very own wholesome, tasty, all-natural mix (without preservatives!) and pour into our machine to create our special frozen custard. The custard is whipped into frozen slabs where it falls into a scooping container. Unlike soft serve, our machine adds very little air, which makes for a nice, thick, and creamy treat.

Now that you know why frozen custard is superior to ice cream, why would you even DREAM of eating soft serve ice cream when you can have delicious, thick, rich frozen custard?
